Exercise 7.1: Creating a Boot Floppy Disk and Emergency Repair Disks

This exercise creates a set of disks that enable you to start your workstation in case of boot failure, and to repair a workstation that doesn’t boot properly.
Objectives:Establish a course of action when the boot process fails
Time Estimate:20 minutes
To create the boot floppy, follow these steps:
1.Insert a blank floppy disk in the disk drive and format that disk.
2.Open the Windows NT Explorer and select the boot.ini, NTLDR, and ntdetect.com.
3.Copy these four files to the floppy disk to create the NT boot floppy disk.
4.Restart your computer without removing the floppy disk from the drive. If disk is valid, it boots your computer.
5.Label the disk and store the disk in a secure location.
To create a set of emergency repair disks, follow these steps:
6.Choose the Command Prompt command from the Programs submenu of the Start menu.
7.Type RDISK /S and press the Enter key.
8.Click on the Create Repair Disk button in the Repair Disk Utility dialog box (refer back to fig. 7.3).
9.Insert a formatted floppy disk, and then click on the OK button.
10.After Windows NT Workstation creates the ERD, remove the floppy disk, write-protect the disk, and store it away.
11.Click on the Exit button to close RDSIK.
  1. Click on the Close box.
