Monitoring and Optimization

This chapter prepares you for the exam by covering the following objectives:
Monitoring and optimization of the Windows NT Workstation 4.0 product can be broken down into three parts. The first is to understand the tools within Windows NT used to monitor system activity and performance. The second is to interpret symptoms and to know which tool can help diagnose the situation. The third is to understand the complete effects of one Windows NT component on others before making changes.

The Windows NT Workstation 4.0 product, running as a stand-alone system or networked in an Windows NT domain, will have very different issues to be considered. This chapter focuses on Windows NT Workstation 4.0 in a simple Windows NT domain networked environment.

Two basic Windows NT Workstation 4.0 tools are discussed in this chapter: the Task Manager and the Performance Monitor. Additional tools are mentioned as supportive roles. Each tool is discussed as to its merits and purpose. Along with detailed descriptions of the features of these tools, this chapter contains recommended techniques and suggested uses.

The Windows NT Resource Kit and third-party utilities mentioned in this chapter are for information only, and will be elaborated on later in this chapter.

To implement changes, you must make use of several Windows NT features. For this reason, a fair understanding of Windows NT is required before you can start to monitor and modify performance.
