Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol

New to Windows NT Workstation 4.0 is an extension to PPP called Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP). PPTP enables a DUN client to establish a communications session with a RAS server over the Internet. PPTP enables multiprotocol virtual private networks (VPNs), so remote users can gain secure encrypted access to their corporate networks over the Internet. Because PPTP encapsulates TCP/IP, NWLink, and NetBEUI, it enables the Internet to be used as a backbone for NWLink and NetBEUI.

To use PPTP, first establish a connection from the DUN client to the Internet and then establish a connection to the RAS server over the Internet.
