Line Protocols

The network transport protocols (NetBEUI, NWLink, and TCP/IP) were designed for the characteristics of LANs and are not suitable for use in phone-based connections. To make the network transport protocols function properly in phone-based connections, it is necessary to encapsulate them in a line protocol. Windows NT Workstation 4.0 supports two different line protocols: SLIP and PPP.
