Implementing Windows NT Workstation as a Client in a NetWare Environment
To enable a Windows NT Workstation 4.0 computer to access and share resources on a NetWare server, it may be necessary to install additional software besides the NWLink protocol on the Windows NT Workstation 4.0 computers. The type of access that you are trying to establish determines whether additional software needs to be installed. NWLink can establish client/server connections, but does not provide access to files and printers on NetWare servers.
If you want to be able to access files or printers on a NetWare server, you must install the Microsoft Client Service for NetWare (CSNW), which is included with Windows NT Workstation 4.0. CSNW enables Windows NT Workstation 4.0 to access files and printers at NetWare servers running NetWare 2.x or later (including NetWare 4.x servers running NDS). CSNW installs an additional network redirector.
Windows NT Workstation 4.0 computers that have NWLink and CSNW installed, gain the following capabilities:
- A new network redirector compatible with NetWare Core Protocol (NCP). NCP is the standard Novell protocol for file and print sharing.
- Long file names, when the NetWare server is configured to support long file names.
- Large Internet Protocol (LIP) to automatically determine the largest possible frame size to communicate with NetWare servers.

The Microsoft Client Service for NetWare (CSNW) enables Windows NT Workstation 4.0 to access files and printers on NetWare servers.

Although NWLink and CSNW enables a Windows NT Workstation 4.0 to access files and printers on a NetWare server running NDS, it does not support administration of NDS trees. Also, although CSNW enables a Windows NT Workstation 4.0 to access files and printers on a NetWare server, it doesn’t enable NetWare clients to access files and printers on a Windows NT Workstation 4.0.
If you need NetWare clients to be able to access files and printers on a Windows NT 4.0 computer, you must install Microsoft File and Print Services for NetWare (FPNW), available separately from Microsoft, on a Windows NT Server 4.0.

Windows NT Workstation 4.0 can access files and printers on a NetWare server without adding CSNW by connecting through a Windows NT Server configured with Gateway Services for NetWare (GSNW). GSNW can only be installed on Windows NT Server.
