NDIS 4.0
NDIS 4.0 is an updated version, for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, of the boundary layer that defines the interaction of network protocols and network adapter card drivers. Any network protocol compliant with NDIS 4.0 can communicate with any network card driver compliant with NDIS 4.0.
The initial connection made between each protocol being used and the network card driver is referred to as network binding. The actual set of networking components used is called the protocol stack. If you have more than one network adapter in your com-puter, each adapter card’s protocol stack can be configured individually.
In Windows NT 4.0, NDIS 4.0 enables the following:
- An unlimited number of network adapter cards.
- An unlimited number of network protocols can be bound to a single network adapter card.
- Independence between protocols and adapter card drivers.
- Communication linkages between adapter cards and their drivers.

Windows NT 4.0 can also use drivers written to be compliant with the NDIS 3.0 specification that was used by Windows NT 3.x.
