Exercise 3.5: Printer Installation and Configuration

This lab walks you through installation and configuration of a printer in Windows NT Workstation.
Objective:Install and configure printers
Time Estimate:35 minutes
To install and share a printer, follow these steps:
1.Log on to Windows NT Workstation as an account with administrative permissions on that workstation.
2.Open the Printers folder by going to the Start button, Settings, Printers.
3.Double-click on the Add Printer Wizard.
4.Leave the default of My Computer and click on Next.
5.Click on Enable Printer Pooling, and then click on LPT2 and LPT3.
6.From the list of printers, select HP on the left and then HP LaserJet 4 on the right. Click on Next.
7.For the printer name, type My Printer.
8.When prompted to share the printer, click on the Shared radio button. Do not share the printer to other operating systems.
9.When prompted to print a test page, select No.
10.Click on Finish. When prompted, enter the path to the Windows NT Workstation installation files.
To set printer permissions, follow these steps:
1.Log on to Windows NT Workstation as an account with administrative permissions on that workstation.
2.Open the Printers folder by going to the Start button, Settings, Printers.
3.Right-click on My Printer and choose the Properties from the Context menu.
4.Click on the Security tab and the Permissions button.
5.What are the default permissions for your newly created printer?
6.Click on the Add button and select an existing Windows NT Workstation group to add to the list of permissions. Under Type of Access, select Manage Documents.
7.Click on OK to exit the printer properties for My Printer.
To set the schedule for a printer, follow these steps:
1.Log on to Windows NT Workstation as an account with administrative permissions on that workstation.
2.Open the Printers folder by going to the Start button, Settings, Printers.
3.Right-click on My Printer and choose the Properties from the Context menu.
4.Click on the Scheduling tab and set the printer to be available from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.
5.Set the priority to 50.
6.For the spool settings, select to print spooled documents first.
7.Close the properties for My Printer.
To view the spool directory location, follow these steps:
1.Log on to Windows NT Workstation as an account with administrative permissions on that workstation.
2.Open the Printers folder by going to the Start button, Settings, Printers.
3.From the File menu, choose Server Properties.
4.Click on the Advanced tab.
5.What is the location of the spool directory?
6.Close the Printers folder.
To stop and restart the Spooler service, follow these steps:
1.Log on to Windows NT Workstation as an account with administrative permissions on that workstation.
2.Launch the Control Panel by going to the Start button, Settings Control Panel.
3.Double-click on the Services icon.
4.Find the Spooler service in the list and highlight it.
5.Click on the Stop button and continue when prompted.
6.After the Spooler service has been stopped, go to the properties of My Printer, to the General tab.
7.Click on the Print Test Page button. What message did you get?
8.Restart the Spooler service.
