Setting Permissions on NTFS Partitions, Folders, and Files

One of the benefits of using NTFS on a Windows NT Workstation is the added security that NTFS enables you to take advantage of under Windows NT. NTFS permissions enable you to get beyond the security limitations of shared folder permissions (that they are effective only when accessing the directory from across the network) and implement local security on both the folder and the file level. Shared folder permissions can only be assigned at the folder level. NTFS permissions can also apply to a user who is accessing a shared network resource as well as a local resource. NTFS permissions are applicable only on an NTFS partition—they are not available on FAT partitions.
