Exercise 2.4: Installing Windows NT Workstation 4.0 from

a Network Server

This exercise details how to upgrade an existing MS-DOS system to Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 when the installation files are located on a network server.
Objective:Install Windows NT Workstation on an Intel platform
Time Estimate:60 minutes
1.Format three high-density floppies and label them as follows:
 Windows NT Workstation Setup Boot Disk
 Windows NT Workstation Setup Disk #2
 Windows NT Workstation Setup Disk #3
2.From a command prompt, enter the appropriate command to connect a network drive to drive letter X. The appropriate command for a Microsoft based network would be:
 NET USE X: \\server\sharename
3.Change to drive X.
4.Start the Windows NT installation process by typing WINNT and pressing Enter.
5.Insert Windows NT Workstation Setup Disk #3 into the floppy drive.
6.When prompted by the Windows NT 4.0 Upgrade/ Installation screen, click on Continue.
7.Wait while files are copied.
8.When prompted, insert Windows NT Workstation Setup Disk #2.
9.When prompted, insert Windows NT Workstation Setup Boot Disk.
10.When prompted, leave the Windows NT Workstation Setup Boot Disk in the drive and restart your computer.
11.Wait while the computer restarts and files are copied.
12.When prompted, insert Windows NT Workstation Setup Disk #2.
13.At the Windows NT Workstation Setup Welcome to Setup screen, press Enter to start the installation process.
14.Press Enter to detect mass storage devices.
15.When prompted, insert Windows NT Workstation Setup Disk #3.
16.Press Enter to approve the list of detected mass storage devices. (Don’t worry if your IDE hard disk controller isn’t detected. The installation process should proceed just fine anyway.)
17.Press Page Down, repeatedly, until you reach the last page of the Windows NT Licensing Agreement.
18.Press F8 to approve the Windows NT Licensing Agreement.
19.Press Enter to approve the list of detected hardware components.
20.Select the desired installation partition, and then press Enter.
21.Press Enter to not convert the installation partition to NTFS.
22.Press Enter to install to the default directory named \WINNT.
23.Press Enter to examine the hard disk for errors.
24.Wait for hard disk examination.
25.Wait while files are copied.
26.When prompted, remove the floppy disk from the drive and press Enter to restart the computer and begin the graphical portion of the setup process.
27.When the computer restarts, click on Next.
28.Select the typical option for installation, and then click on Next.
29.Enter your name and organization, and click on Next.
30.Enter your CD-ROM key, and then click on Next.
31.Enter your computer name (specify a computer named Test), and then click on Next.
32.Enter and confirm the password for the administrator account, and then click on Next.
33.Click on Yes to create an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).
34.Click on Next to install the most common components.
35.Click on Next to install Windows NT Networking.
36.Specify whether your computer will be participating in a network, and then click on Next. If your computer will not be participating in a network, skip ahead to step 43.
37.Click on Start Search For Your Adapter, or Select From List.
38.Select your adapter from the list, and then click on Next.
39.Make sure that NetBEUI is the only specified protocol, and then click on Next.
40.Click on Continue to approve the network card settings. (Remember that Windows NT 4.0 doesn’t support Plug and Play, and your network card settings must be correct.)
41.Click on Next to start the network.
42.Click on Next to install the computer named Test into a workgroup named Workgroup.
43.Click on Next to finish setup.
44.Select the proper time zone, and then click on Close.
45.Click on OK to approve the detected video adapter.
46.Click on Test to test the video adapter.
47.Click on OK to start the video test and wait five seconds.
48.Click on Yes (if you saw the bitmap properly).
49.Click on OK to save the video settings.
50.Click on OK in the Display Properties dialog box.
51.Wait while files are copied.
52.Wait while the configuration is saved.
53.Insert a floppy that will become your ERD, and then click on OK.
54.Wait while the ERD is formatted and files are copied.
55.Wait while the temporary configuration files are removed.
56.Press the button to restart your computer.
