Installing Windows NT Workstation 4.0 on an Intel Computer
with an Existing Operating System
If your computer already has an existing operating system with support for CD-ROM, you can install Windows NT Workstation 4.0 directly from the installation CD. All you have to do is to execute WINNT.EXE, which is a 16-bit program compatible with MS-DOS, Windows 3.x, and Windows 95. WINNT.EXE is located in the \I386 folder on the Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 CD. It performs the following steps:
- Creates the three Setup boot disks (requires three blank, high density, formatted disks)
- Creates the $WIN_NT$.~LS temporary folder and copies the contents of the \I386 folder to it
- Prompts the user to restart the computer from the first Setup boot disk
You can also modify the installation process (see Table 2.3).

There is also a 32-bit version of the installation program called WINNT32.EXE that is used to upgrade earlier versions of Windows NT and cannot be used to upgrade Windows 95. WINNT32.EXE does not support the /f, /c, or /l options. See the section entitled “Upgrading to Windows NT Workstation 4.0” for more information.
