Upgrading to Windows NT Workstation 4.0
If you are upgrading an earlier version of Microsoft Windows NT Workstation to Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0, you need to use the 32-bit version of the installation program WINNT32.EXE. WINNT32.EXE was previously explained in the section entitled “Installing Windows NT Workstation 4.0.” Installations of any version of Windows NT Server cannot be upgraded to Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and you must install into a new folder and re-install all of your Windows applications.
If Windows NT Workstation 3.x is upgraded to Windows NT Workstation 4.0, all the existing Registry entries are preserved, including the following:
- User and Group settings
- Preferences for applications
- Network settings
- Desktop environment
To upgrade Windows NT Workstation 3.x to Windows NT Workstation 4.0, install to the same folder as the existing installation and answer yes to the upgrade question that you are asked during the installation process, and then follow the instructions.

Because of differences in hardware device support and differences in the internal structure of the Registry, there is no upgrade path from Microsoft Windows 95 to Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. You need to perform a new install of Windows NT to a new folder and then re-install all your Windows applications. No system or application settings are shared or migrated. After your installation of Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and applications is complete, you should delete the Windows 95 directory.
For a significant performance increase for the file transfer portion of a network-based upgrade of a previous version of Windows NT Workstation to Windows NT Workstation 4.0, use multiple /s switches with WINNT32.EXE to specify multiple servers that contain the source files (see the next section).
