Installing Windows NT Workstation on an Intel Platform

Before you try to install Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0, you must be able to answer the following questions:
1.Is your hardware on the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Hardware Compatibility List (HCL)?
2.Does your hardware meet the minimum requirements for processor, RAM, and hard disk space?
3.Are you attempting to install Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 on a “clean” system, or are you planning to upgrade a computer with an existing operating system?
4.If you are upgrading a computer with an existing operating system, will the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 operating system be replacing the other operating system? Or, do you want to be able to use both operating systems and be able to switch between them by “dual-booting”?
5.What file system(s) do you want to use: FAT or NTFS?
6.Will your Windows NT Workstation 4.0 be a member of a workgroup or be a member of a domain?
7.Which type of installation do you want to perform: typical, portable, compact, or custom?
8.Where are the installation files that you will use to install Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 located: on a local floppy/CD-ROM, or on a network-distribution server?
After you have determined what your answers are to the preceding questions, write them down. Your answers help you to choose the proper options during the setup process.

The Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) specifies all the computer systems and peripheral devices that have been tested for operation with Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. Devices not listed on the HCL can cause intermittent failures or, in extreme cases, system crashes.
